To improve our understanding of composite materials, members of both the Chassis and the Vehicle Dynamics teams visited Lamplas, in Consett, County Durham. Lamplas are experts in composite and polymer engineering; visiting the company presented the perfect opportunity to learn about incorporating composite materials to reduce the weight of our next car, NR11. Our industrial contact, Michael Rhodes has been involved with Newcastle Racing since our first car and last year helped us to manufacture a test front wing and the nose cone for NRX.
Following our visit, we are very excited to continue our long term partnership with Lamplas and hope to work alongside them to create our next composite chassis. This shall form a key part of weight reduction strategy, in turn improving handling, acceleration and braking.
Additionally, Graeme Hogg from QuickGrind visited us this month to discuss our future plans. Whilst in the Formula Student bay we presented him with a picture of NRX and the QuickGrind team at Silverstone last summer. He was also gifted a bespoke jumper, in QuickGrind colours, hand knitted by our supervisor Dr Julian Happian-Smith.
